How to Set a Weight Loss Goal and Actually Achieve It.

By Heather Johnson.

Has it happened to you that you want to lose weight and be healthier, but no matter how hard you try you can’t reach your goal? Maybe the problem is not your diet nor your exercise routine, maybe the problem is that from the beginning you have chosen the wrong goal to work for

A realistic but motivating goal is one of the keys to success when you want to lose weight (I know this because everything changed in my life when I set the right goal for my weight loss journey.)

Then, if you still don’t know how to set the right weight loss goal, you are in big trouble!

Your goal is the basis of all your progress, the fuel that will push you to the end, if you set the wrong goal from the beginning (or even a good one for the wrong reasons) you will fail no matter how many times you try…

But hey! Don’t worry, today I will teach you how to set a weight loss goal in the right way, a goal that motivates you and pushes you to the end of the road.

This goal will be your best weapon to get hight motivation every day, to finally make changes happen and build the body and life that you want from now on, I hope you are ready for this.

First… What is your goal?

Ok, you already know that you want to lose weight right? But exactly how much weight do you want to lose?

This is different for all people and depends on your current situation, your final target, what’s important to you, and the reason why you want to lose weight.

But maybe you aren’t clear about how much weight you need to lose in order to get a healthy body, and that’s ok.

So, a good way to decide the amount of weight that you need to lose, is simply knowing the ideal weight that you should have according to your age, sex and height, this is what we call Body Mass Index or BMI.

The BMI is just a guide to know the weight you should have to enjoy good health… then you should take it as just that, as a guide to know the amount of overweight your body currently has.

After knowing that, now you can set the definitive amount of weight that you need to lose to achieve your final goal.

Breaking the big picture into small pieces.

Now that you have decided how much weight you want to lose (or at least have an idea of the total amount) you may feel overwhelmed by the final number, and maybe you can feel like it will be impossible for you to achieve your goal…

But stay calm, now you just have to follow the next step to disappear those feelings…

The key at this point is to set smaller goals for shorter periods of time, for example, if your ultimate goal is to lose 40 pounds in 6 months, you should first establish a smaller goal of losing 8 pounds in the first 30 days.

Trust me, take it slowly and you will win…

It’s really important to start slowly, especially if you have never tried to lose weight before.

You must establish a goal that is realistic for you.

After you start losing some weight, and you gain confidence in your plan and your habits, you can change the amount of weight you want to lose according to your own circumstances.

Tip: Of course, to lose weight successfully isn’t enough to learn how to set your weight loss goal correctly, you must also have an effective plan. So, if you don’t know what to do to start building a healthy body, you can get our weight loss guide for free by clicking here.

The final piece, discovering your why.

We have almost finished your goal, but it still lacks the last and most important ingredient…

Many people set weight loss goals every year, every month, every week, but the truth is that just a few get to the end

This is due to the lack of this last ingredient of the recipe.

So if you take enough time taking this last step, the possibilities of building the body you want increase in an amazing way.

So now it’s time to add in your recipe your WHY…

What is this? It’s simply the main reason (or reasons) why you want to reach your goal…

A strong why will be the difference between success and failure, so you should take all the time needed to search deep in your head and your heart, and find out the real reason why you want to do it.

If you say “I want to lose 30 pounds in the next 6 months” it sounds good, but it’s not enough… it doesn’t really motivate you, it’s not a goal for which you would do anything to achieve it.

But instead, if you say “I want to lose 30 pounds in the next 6 months because I’m tired of my low self-esteem, I want to recover my health and my confidence to live happier every day and live a long life with my family…” That would be a goal for which you would strive every day until you get it, right?

Well, that’s the power of a strong WHY!

That’s why the last step you should take before starting your weight loss journey, is to take all the time you need to discover your big why.

You must establish reasons that are important to you, not to satisfy other people, do it for your health, for your self-esteem, for your family, for your dreams…

After completing this step now you are ready to start. just remember that learning how to set a weight loss goal and doing it is just the beginning, now you must establish the plan by which you will achieve it (you can get our weight loss blueprint from here.)
